Alternative Medicine as Complementary Medicine

alternative medicine soursop tea graviola

According to an article, researchers from the Cancer Outcomes, Public Policy and Effectiveness Research (COPPER) Center at Yale School of Medicine and Yale Cancer Center, state that patients who choose to receive alternative therapy as treatment for the curable types of cancer instead of conventional cancer treatment have a higher risk of death.

Let us discuss this, shall we?

Alternative medicine is a term that describes medical treatments that are used instead of traditional (mainstream) therapies. Some people also refer to it as “integrative,” or “complementary” medicine. Complementary medicine is a group of diagnostic and therapeutic disciplines that are used together with conventional medicine.

Following this thought of “complementary medicine” it is important to spread the word about Soursop / Graviola uses in this area.  It can help reducing the symptoms related to chemotherapy sessions, especially weight loss, hair loss, vomiting, dizziness, and nausea. Soursop is compatible with cancer treatments. So, if patients still follow their recommended and conventional treatment, but complement it with Soursop to feel a bit better, why not?

Why there is such a large number of graviola benefits?

Its in the composition of the plant. To begin with, soursop is rich in minerals and vitamins including vitamin B1, B2, and C. Additionally, it has potassium, calcium, zinc, phosphorous and magnesium. The stem, bark and leaves are rich in antioxidants, particularly  the Coenzyme Q10.

The active ingredients present in Graviola/Soursop leaves, are believed to cause the death of cancer cells by oxygen deprivation, energy and sugar deprivation (sugar, which is considered the main ingredient for cancer cells).

Due to the increasing recognition of graviola, there are lots of producers who’ve produced their very own extracts and leaves. It’s essential that you choose carefully and assure that you are getting pure, top quality graviola extracts.

But, it is strictly not advised to stop or replace your conventional treatment with Soursop treatment. We kindly remind you to consult your doctor always before taking any dietary supplement.

Research: Chemotherapy can cause metastasis

First, it is important to know what is metastasis: it is basically the spread of cancer cells from the place where they first formed to another part of the body.

In metastasis, cancer cells break away from the original (primary) tumor, travel through the blood or lymph system, and form a new tumor in other organs or tissues of the body. The new, metastatic tumor is the same type of cancer as the primary tumor. For example, if breast cancer spreads to the lung, the cancer cells in the lung are breast cancer cells, not lung cancer cells.

A new research at Israel’s Technion alarmingly reveals that the body acts to assist the tumor because it wrongly identifies chemotherapy as damaging.

In a series of research studies on animals, human cancer tumor cultures and indirectly also on cancer patients themselves, Prof. Yuval Shaked and his team found that while chemotherapy destroys the tumor, it encourages the development of metastasis tumors. This takes place since the body identifies chemotherapy as an attack on the body itself and mobilizes all systems for the least desirable cause – saving the tumor.

What does this series of research studies say? It identifies a real need to find a new solution, in which chemotherapy is applied in a way that reduces the damage caused as much as possible, while preserving its benefits.

“It has been known and evident for years that cancer tumors become resistant to chemotherapy and turn ever more aggressive over time, but estimates had been that this entire development takes place inside the cancer cells themselves, the cells that remained in the body despite the damage of chemotherapy,” Shaked explains. “Following our research, it appears that the reality is somewhat more complex. It seems that resistance is developed not only by tumor cells, but by the patient’s entire body. Resistance to the treatment is directed by the body. (…)This is true not only for chemotherapy, but for any intervention aimed at damaging the tumor. Once the tumor is harmed, the body tries to help.”

So, the resistance of cancer to treatment, the fact that treatment becomes less effective over time, is caused by the body and not the cancer cells themselves.

It is important to remind you that Soursop / Graviola is an excellent complement to chemotherapy treatments. Moreover, it can also help reducing the symptoms related to chemotherapy sessions, especially weight loss, hair loss, vomiting, dizziness, and nausea.

Also, the active ingredients present in Graviola/Soursop leaves, are believed to cause the death of cancer cells by oxygen deprivation, energy and sugar deprivation (sugar, which is considered the main ingredient for cancer cells).

But, it is strictly not advised to stop or replace your conventional treatment with Soursop treatment. We kindly remind you to consult your doctor always before taking any dietary supplement.

Soursop: Pharmaceutical interest and Uses

Graviola / Soursop may have only lately gained popularity in the western world, but this plant features a lengthy history in ancient herbal treatments and remedies.

Before starting to list all its benefits, it is important to comprehend why there is such a large number of graviola benefits? Its in the composition of the plant. To begin with, soursop is rich in minerals and vitamins including vitamin B1, B2, and C. Additionally, it has potassium, calcium, zinc, phosphorous and magnesium. The stem, bark and leaves are rich in antioxidants, particularly  the Coenzyme Q10.

According to researches, graviola tea may help regulate blood pressure since it has hypotensive qualities, meaning someone who has high blood pressure may be treated simply by consuming the tea. People also drink the Graviola tea to deal with cough, flu and bronchial asthma.

A research, that was carried out in the National Cancer Institutehad quite an astounding outcome. It had been discovered that one of the graviola benefits includes being able to eliminate cancer cells in our body. The Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center also verifies that graviola, particularly graviola extract, comes with advantageous elements including anti-rheumatic, anti-viral, anti-parasitic and emetic.

But, how does Graviola act on diseased cells, meaning the cancer cells?

The active ingredients present in Graviola/Soursop leaves, are believed to cause the death of cancer cells by oxygen deprivation, energy and sugar deprivation (sugar, which is considered the main ingredient for cancer cells).

Soursop has qualities that will kill toxins and will keep your defense mechanisms operating at optimum health. Graviola is rich in fiber, meaning that when you ingest it regularly, you may expect regular bowel movements.  Soursop is rich in calcium and phosphorous, which strengthens the bones and stops soft tissue illnesses like osteoporosis. Soursop can help in proper blood circulation, boost metabolic process and reduce anxiety, it has been said to help with heart function as well as your central nervous system.

There is not enough scientific evidence to assist some claims, though it’s been broadly thought that soursop leaves may also treat gout by decreasing the crystals in your body. For individuals struggling with back discomfort and rheumatism, they can usually benefit from consuming graviola leaves extract. Soursop is also thought to assist in preventing infection by inhibiting the development of infections, bacteria and unwanted organisms.

Due to the increasing recognition of graviola, there are lots of producers who’ve produced their very own extracts and leaves. It’s essential that you choose carefully and assure that you are getting pure, top quality graviola extracts.

What is “Chemo Brain”?

For years people with cancer have worried about, joked about, and been frustrated by the mental cloudiness they sometimes notice before, during, and after cancer treatment. Even though its exact cause isn’t known, and it can happen at any time when you have cancer, this mental fog is commonly called chemo brain.

Here are just a few examples of what patients call chemo brain:

  • Forgetting things that they usually have no trouble recalling (memory lapses)
  • Trouble concentrating (they can’t focus on what they’re doing, have a short attention span, may “space out”)
  • Trouble remembering details like names, dates, and sometimes larger events
  • Trouble multi-tasking, like answering the phone while cooking, without losing track of one task
  • Taking longer to finish things (disorganized, slower thinking and processing)
  • Trouble remembering common words.

Doctors and researchers call chemo brain many things, such as cancer treatment-related cognitive impairment, cancer-therapy associated cognitive change, or post-chemotherapy cognitive impairment. Most define it as a decrease in mental “sharpness”.

Many cancer treatments, including certain kinds of chemo and radiation, can cause short-term, long-term, and delayed problems.

So far, research hasn’t clearly shown whether chemotherapy causes these thought and memory changes. Early studies only tested people after their chemotherapy. These tests showed that people had cognitive impairment. But more recent research has shown that some people with cancer have similar problems before they start any treatment and that the changes may even improve during treatment.

At this point it is important to underline some of Soursop benefits. Soursop is an excellent complement to chemotherapy treatments. Moreover, it can also help reducing the symptoms related to chemotherapy sessions, especially weight loss, hair loss, vomiting, dizziness, and nausea.

There are some tips on how to cope with chemo brain, but, so far there is no known way to prevent chemo brain. For some people, treating their cancer will mean trouble with thinking, memory, planning, and finding the right words.

Male Breast Cancer: a reality

male breast exam cancer

You may be thinking: Men don’t have breasts, so how can they get breast cancer?

Even though men don’t have breasts like women, they do have a small amount of breast tissue. The “breasts” of an adult man are similar to the breasts of a girl before puberty. In girls, this tissue grows and develops, but in men, it doesn’t. But because it is still breast tissue, men can get breast cancer. Men get the same types of breast cancers that women do, but cancers involving the parts that make and store milk are rare.

Risk factors of male breast cancer include:

  • Breast cancer in a close female relative
  • History of radiation exposure of the chest
  • Enlargement of breasts (called gynecomastia) from drug or hormone treatments, or even some infections and poisons
  • Taking estrogen
  • A rare genetic condition called Klinefelter’s syndrome
  • Severe liver disease (called cirrhosis)
  • Diseases of the testicles such as mumps orchitis, a testicular injury, or an undescended testicle.

The major problem is that breast cancer in men is often diagnosed later than breast cancer in women. This may be because men are less likely to be suspicious of something strange in that area. Also, their small amount of breast tissue is harder to feel, making it harder to catch these cancers early. It also means tumors can spread more quickly to surrounding tissues.

The lymph system is important to understand because it is one of the ways that breast cancers can spread.

male breast cancer structure

But, not all men with cancer cells in their lymph nodes develop metastases to other areas, and some men can have no cancer cells in their lymph nodes and later develop metastases.

Men can also have some benign (not cancerous) breast disorders.

The most important, like for women, is prevention and the auto examination. Know your body and more likely you will figure out what is not normal.

Why is Breast Cancer the most common Cancer in Women?

breast cancer

Breast cancer is a disease in which malignant cells form in the tissues of the breast. Although breast cancer in men is rare, an estimated 2,600 men will be diagnosed with breast cancer and approximately 440 will die each year. Mostly because they are diagnosed too late.

Breast cancer is hormone related, and the factors that modify the risk of this cancer when diagnosed premenopausally and when diagnosed (much more commonly) postmenopausally are not the same. For premenopausal breast cancer there was convincing evidence that consuming alcoholic drinks increases the risk of this cancer and lactation protects against it. Adult attained height and greater birth weight are probably causes of this cancer and body fatness probably protects against this cancer.

Nevertheless, the strongest risk factor for breast cancer is age. A woman’s risk of developing this disease increases as she gets older. It has been proven that our body parts, tissues and organs get old in different ways, and sometimes the biological age does not correspond to the chronological age. Women breast tissues do get old faster than other parts of the body. But, there are other factors that can contribute to an increased risk.

It is also known that many women are more interested in the risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer at specific ages or over specific time periods than in the risk of being diagnosed at some point during their lifetime.

Does this mean that women are increasingly prepared to be affected by the disease because it is so common? Does it also mean that being aware of the way the disease also affects femininity besides health itself, it is “safer” to be stricken by it later in life?

The good news is that in recent years, perhaps coinciding with the decline in prescriptive hormone replacement therapy after menopause, we have seen a gradual reduction in female breast cancer incidence rates among women aged 50 and older. Death rates from breast cancer have been declining since about 1990, in part due to better screening and early detection, increased awareness, and continually improving treatment options.

And also natural treatments will continuously win a place in our lives.

Soursop Leaves and Hypertension

high blood pressure hypertension

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure (HBP), is a long term medical condition in which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. High blood pressure usually does not cause symptoms. Long term high blood pressure, however, is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, stroke, heart failure, peripheral vascular disease, vision loss, and chronic kidney disease.

By now you may know that nutrients from the leaves, fruit, bark and other parts of Soursop are said to have strong anti-tumor / anti-cancer effects, and scientifically proven to cure various types of cancers, even though it has not been validated yet. But, this is subject for another post. In addition, the fruits and leaves are also said to function as an anti-bacterial, anti fungal, effective against many types of parasites and worms, blood pressure, depression, stress, and normalize the nervous system.

The high concentration of potassium present in Soursop, together with the antioxidant power of acetogenin are the main responsibles for the benefits of Soursop for people with hypertension. These elements cooperate in the regulation of blood circulation, in dilating the blood vessels and fighting clogged arteries, contributing to a better flow of the blood and oxygen between the heart and other body organs. Consequently, this generates positive effects in blood pressure control.

Female, 48 years
Negeri Sembilan, MALAYSIA

I have high blood pressure and was taking medication in the last 7 years. Since taking the medication, I experienced some side effects such as urination problem and pain in the body, especially in the back and fingers.

About a month ago, I went to the hospital for regular checkups as directed. My blood pressure reading was not satisfactory – 150/100. So the doctor changed my medication.

The new medication have made the side effects that I have been experiencing become worse. I feel like not willing to go on like this anymore.

On a day, I heard my friends chatting about the benefits of soursop. I asked them how to treat high blood pressure. They suggested I drink soursop leaves tea.

As side effects from the new medication is quite severe, I decided to not take the medication anymore. I only drink soursop tea every day.

After 3 days, the side effects that I experienced were almost gone. I feel more energetic and cheerful.

After about 3 weeks drinking the soursop tea, I went to the hospital for regular checkups as directed. My blood pressure reading was satisfactory – 130/80. So the doctor again changed my medication, but I did not tell the doctor that I no longer take the medication. I just accept the medication.

We always recommend that you consult a doctor first, and if you have low blood pressure you should not take Soursop

Do you suffer from hypertension? Have you tried Soursop tea lately? Any effects?

Please share with us, we are delighted to hear from you!

The anti diabetic and hypolipidemic activities of Soursop

Diabetes, often referred to by doctors as diabetes mellitus, describes a group of metabolic diseases in which the person has high blood glucose (blood sugar), either because insulin production is inadequate, or because the body’s cells do not respond properly to insulin, or both. It is a long-term condition.

There are three known types of diabetes:

  • Type 1 Diabetes – the body does not produce insulin. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1.
  • Type 2 Diabetes – the body does not produce enough insulin for proper function. Approximately 90% of all cases of diabetes worldwide are of this type.
  • Gestational Diabetes – this type affects females during pregnancy.

Insulin is made in the pancreas, an organ located behind the stomach. The pancreas contains clusters of cells called islets. Beta cells within the islets make insulin and release it into the blood.

Due to the traditional application of Annona muricata against diabetes, several studies have investigated this potential in vivo. The nutrients in Soursop leaves are believed to stabilize blood sugar levels in the normal range.

Studies have also indicated that Soursop extract treatment decreased the blood glucose concentration of diabetic rats due to the regeneration/proliferation in the pancreatic Beta cells. Histopathological examination showed that the leaf extract caused the regeneration of β-cells in the pancreas islets. The stem bark ethanolic extract also demonstrated promising antidiabetic and hypolipidemic activities. Treatment with the extract (150 and 300 mg/kg) to rats for 14 days lowered the increased blood glucose and was associated with a reduction in cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

All types of diabetes are treatable. Diabetes type 1 lasts a lifetime, there is no known cure. Type 2 usually lasts a lifetime, however, some people have managed to get rid of their symptoms without medication, through a combination of exercise, diet and body weight control.

Soursop as a Sedative

soursop calmative

Few of us know Soursop as having a calming effect. But, Soursop is rich in tryptophan, which is present in leaves but also roots and bark of the plant. Tryptophan is an essential amino acid used in the synthesis of the neurotransmitter serotonin and the melatonin, both closely linked to the control of mood and sleep. The neurons produce serotonin using in addition to tryptophan, vitamin B3 (also known as niacin) and magnesium, both also present in Soursop.

Some research has shown that serotonin is a neurotransmitter of central importance in depression, and supplements with tryptophan have already been used as a therapeutic strategy in patients with this disease. Low melatonin levels lead to insomnia, irritability and stress.

Thus, Soursop can help maintain adequate levels of tryptophan, vitamin B3 and magnesium and, consequently serotonin and melatonin, acting as a natural calming and helping prevent cases of depression, anxiety and hyperactivity.

The infusion / decoction of the leaves of Soursop, can then be used to combat these diseases. In this case, a cup of a quantity of infused 3 to 6 leaves of Soursop should be drank.

In addition, the leaves also provide a calm and relaxing bath for children, by spreading some leaves in the bathtub and bathing the little ones.

Annona Muricata and Wound Healing

leg injury wound treatment

Wound is the first medical problem that is faced by the human race.

In recent years, there has been a noteworthy surge of interest in using natural remedies with more efficient healing potential against different dermatological and skin disorders, including burns, cuts and wounds. Medicinal plants have provided more affordable wound healing products with higher safety from hypersensitive reactions compared to the synthetic pharmaceutical agents.

The wound healing activity of alcoholic extract of stem and bark of Annona muricata was found to show the marked reduction in area of the wound which was tested in albino rats proving their possible use in healing wounds.

The healing progresses go through three general stages:

  1. Inflammatory
  2. Proliferative and repair
  3. Remodelling stages.

The cellular responses include blood supply, surface covering and reproduction of collagen which ultimately helps to bind the wound margin and development of permanent functional tensile strength.

The extract of Annona muricata as an ointment applied daily for a period of 12 days significantly reduced the area of open wounds as tests proved. The actual healing seems to proceed from the 4th day onwards from the day of wounding. It accelerates various stages of wound healing, including wound contractionepithelialization and collagen synthesis. In addition, it also decreased the oxidative and inflammatory stresses in the wound area.

Internally or externally, Soursop does not stop being an ally!
